Virtual Machine Not Responding ? PDF Print E-mail

If you are running ESX server and you have an unresponsive virtual machine, or you have tried to change it's power state by stopping and starting it to no avail you may have to get on the command line.
The ESX console offers some powerful commands that give you the opportunity to turn the machine off that is stuck at 95 percent on it's poweroff or poweron operation.

The most well known of these commands is one of the vmware-cmd swiss army knife options, stop and start
Using putty connect to your service console (the ip address of your ESX host)

Once connected and authenticated, you need to get the complete path to your virtual machine's configuration file, the .vmx.
you can achieve this by typing vmware-cmd -l

Using that information, we can perform a start or stop operation on our virtual machine from the command line.

Get the machines current state by running the following command :
vmware-cmd /virtualmachinepath/virtualmachine.vmx getstate

Perform a graceful shutdown first by running the following command :
vmware-cmd /virtualmachinepath/virtualmachine.vmx stop soft

If that does not work, try a hard shutdown by running the command below, but be aware that this will STOP the machine dead. It could cause inconsistency inside the virtual machine!
vmware-cmd /virtualmachinepath/virtualmachine.vmx stop hard

To start the virtualmachine from the command line, you can run this command :
vmware-cmd /virtualmachinepath/virtualmachine.vmx start

There are additional things you can do to stop a virtual machine that might not fall victim to your coersive command line tactics first go.
If the commands above do not work then you could try and identify the process associated with the virtual machine and kill it.
Use this with caution, especially if you are not a command line warrior because killing an incorrect process could be disasterous.

run the following command to identify the PID aka process id of the task you wish to kill :
ps -ef | grep virtualmachinename

In the resultant window you will see a process id of the relevant virtual machine. Use that number and run the following command, replacing PIDNUMBER with the correct process ID :
kill -9 PIDNUMBER

Of course, if you have a neatly configured infrastructure you could VMotion all of the other virtual machines off the host with the unresponsive machine and try a reboot on the host as well.

Green ICT is the study and practice of using computers and telecommunications in a way which maximises positive environmental benefit and minimise the negative impact. A common misconception is that Green ICT is for engineers and environmentalists, but this is a management issue where IT Service Management specialists can apply their skills to contribute to the business as well as the environment.

Green ICT seeks to inform accepted management practises to achieve efficient and effective business interaction.  The same skills which IT professionals apply to management of projects can be used to estimate report and reduce carbon emissions, helping organisation to meet the new requirements imposed by governments.

The Australian Computer Society has produced the world's first online postgraduate course in Green ICT, specifically designed for IT professionals. The course is modelled on the ACS's IT Service Management course and designed to align with the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA). The course content is available free online.

Tom Worthington is the designer of the Green ICT Course for the Computer Professional Education Program of the Australian Computer Society. An independent IT consultant, Tom has been an expert witness in several court cases involving international patent, computer, web and Internet issues, as well as advising governments and companies on computer problems. He is a Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the Australian National University, where he teaches the design of web sites, e-commerce and professional ethics.
